Season 2 Flashback Kit:

Introduction to Cordials and Shrubs

Season 2 (spring/summer 2023): Introduction to Cordials and Shrubs

Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off, expanding from bitters into other key members of your sidebar: cordials and shrubs. You'll make 4 new bitters (Cherry Bark Vanilla, Bergamot Mango, Coffee Pecan, and MinTea), 2 cordials (Toasted Orange Hazelnut and Spiced Pineapple Banana), 2 shrubs (Fig + Thyme and Raspberry Ginger), 14 all-new cocktails, and two tasty breakfast dishes that incorporate our cocktail ingredients.

  • Episode 1: Building Blocks I – Bitters & Shrubs

We dive right into the thick of things in Episode 1, exploring shrubs (also known as drinking vinegars) and making our first two bitters: Cherry Bark Vanilla and Bergamot Mango, plus two shrubs – Raspberry Ginger and Fig + Thyme. We’ll put our shrubs to use in two new cocktails Sother designed for this episode: the Berry Bush and the Fig Leaf.

  • Episode 2: Building Blocks II – Cordials

Cordials – sweet, syrupy spirits like triple sec – are key to so many classic cocktails, but few people these days bother to make their own. Let's fix that! We'll be making two: Toasted Orange Hazelnut and Spiced Pineapple Banana. And of course we'll make some novel drinks, this time using the bitters we made in episode 1: Oaxacan Cough Syrup (a mezcal negroni with our cherry bark vanilla bitters) and Bergamot Station (a Tom Collins with our bergamot mango bitters).

  • Episode 3: Shaken, Not Stirred

James Bond may order his martinis shaken, not stirred... but that could get you tossed out of some fine cocktail bars. Why? Find out as we make a few drinks, split them in half, and compare shaken and stirred versions of each cocktail. Plus, we'll make our second cordial (Spiced Pineapple Banana Cordial) and our next bitters (Coffee Pecan).

  • Episode 4: The New Fashioned Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned was already "old" in 1929, when it was first described in print. But that doesn't mean that it can't be reinvented. We’ll dive deep into what is possibly the “classic-est” of all classic cocktails. Plus, we'll make the fourth and final bitters of the season: MinTea.

  • Episode 5: Brocktail Hour

Breakfast + lunch = brunch. Breakfast + cocktail hour = brocktail hour. Get it? We'll be making two breakfast-appropriate, cocktail-inspired edible treats (a buttercream syrup and a cream cheese frosting) featuring the cordials we made way back in Episode 2, and we'll use the bitters we made over the last two episodes to make cocktails infused with everyone's favorite morning pick-me-ups: coffee and tea. Feel free to have pancakes and waffles on hand to enjoy with our handiwork during the show, or wait until Sunday brunch. Up to you!

  • Episode 6: What to do with… Apple Brandy

In this episode, Sother will dive deep into a classic American spirit – apple brandy – with help from special guest Lisa Laird. Lisa is the scion of the Laird family – proprietors of America's oldest continuously operating distillery and maker of one of our all time favorite apple brandies. We'll make three drinks, including one that features our own Toasted Orange Hazelnut Cordial.
